#PostIt4America; Acts of Quiet Rebellion
Back in the dark days of German occupation during WWII, the Resistance in Paris turned the city itself into a weapon of defiance. They’d sneak out in the dead of night, armed not with guns but with cans of paint, and leave messages scrawled across the walls of their beloved city. These weren’t just words; they were sparks meant to ignite the spirit of rebellion. Short, sharp phrases like “Vive la France” or “Liberté” would greet the occupiers in the morning, driving them mad with frustration. No matter how fast the Germans tried to scrub them off or paint them over, the Resistance would strike again. It was a cat-and-mouse game of paint and persistence, a quiet roar that echoed through the streets, reminding everyone that Paris might be under occupation, but it was never, ever conquered.
And when DT was elected last time, there was an interesting phenomenon that happened in New York City. People started putting post-it notes up all over the subways—notes of encouragement, notes of anger, notes of fear and sadness. Just post-it notes. And they are doing it again.
I really like this idea. I like the thought of carrying post-it notes in my handbag (ok, pocket—I rarely carry a handbag anymore), and putting them up in unexpected places.
I’m going to New York City this week for meetings, and on Friday, I’m taking Amtrak to DC to watch a debate that my daughter’s prison group—who she teaches—will have with James Madison University. One of her debate team members has served 32 years of a life sentence, and this will be the first time he’s outside the prison. His family is coming to watch. In all those years, they’ve never seen him outside the visiting room. I can’t wait. Join me if you can; it’s open to the public. They debated Georgetown last spring and lost by only one vote.
Anyway, I digress. I am going to leave those post-it notes on the train. And I’m going to always write them with a Sharpie. Take that, DT. I’ll show him. Little actions of rebellion ease my weary soul.
What if all of America did it? All over America, especially when we are traveling. #PostIt4America.
Here are some I plan to do while I’m traveling.
Hi from Maine, where we will hide you. #PostIt4America
We will get through this. One day, one post it at a time. #PostIt4America
The only thing we are not allowed to do is give up!
Sad today on this train to DC; used to love going to the capital. Oh my.
Send us the images you post; share them on your social media. Come on. Let’s do this!
Ok, there is one issue. I checked, and 3M makes Post-it Notes, and guess who 3M supports? You guessed it. Ok, we’ll deal with that later tomorrow like Scarlett O’Hare would have done. In the meantime, #PostIt4America.
